NLC Suspends Nationwide Anti-Telecom Tariff Hike Protest As FG Plans Review

JUST IN!! NLC Suspends Nationwide Anti-Telecom Tariff Hike Protest As FG Plans Review

The Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) has announced suspension of the earlier planned protest against FG’s proposed 50% telecom tariff hike as against the 100% initially suggested by the company.

This decision is following a meeting with government representatives at the Office of the Secretary to the federal Government on Monday night.

When Joe Ajaero, the NLC president spoke to journalists after the meeting, he said they made this decision as FG promised to set a larger committee to review the tariff structure.

“We emphasized that the NLC is the largest organisation in Africa, and no stakeholder consultation can exclude us and still stand. On that basis, they agreed to form a broader committee to ensure a fair and inclusive agreement to look at the entire tariff structure as a model to come out with a realistic and all-inclusive agreement.

“So the committee will be made up of five representatives, from both sides and expected to come out with a result after two weeks.

The outcome of such a committee is what will determine our next line of action in terms of protest, in terms of boycott, and in terms of even withdrawal of services, which are the three issues we put online.”

Inclusively, Ajaero disclosed the concern of the NLC towards high electricity tariff and tax regimes which burdens workers, says they are concerned about every issue of the economy in the country.
