Children’s Day: Tinubu Promises Safer Schools for Nigerian Children

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed stronger protection measures for schools located in high-risk areas across Nigeria as part of efforts to improve child safety and tackle insecurity affecting students and teachers.

The directive was announced as Nigeria marked the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, amid growing concerns over kidnappings, attacks on schools, and the rising number of children affected by insecurity in different parts of the country.

Recent incidents in Oyo State and other regions have renewed calls for urgent action to secure learning environments and protect children from violence.

Speaking during the Children’s Day celebration in Abuja, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to child welfare, inclusion, and safety. He stressed that every Nigerian child deserves access to education and protection regardless of background or location.

According to the President:

“A nation that listens to its children is one that is wisely preparing for the future.”

Tinubu also stated that the future of the country already exists “in every classroom, playground, displaced persons camp and rural community,” while calling for practical actions that ensure no child is left behind.

As part of the renewed security measures, the Federal Government is expected to intensify rescue efforts for abducted children, strengthen the Safe School Initiative, and improve collaboration between security agencies and local communities in vulnerable areas.

The President highlighted ongoing reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, including investments in education, healthcare, nutrition, and social protection programmes aimed at improving the lives of Nigerian children.

He also noted that the government is reviewing child protection laws and policies to better address abuse, violence, and exploitation involving minors.

Tinubu urged children to remain focused on education and avoid social vices such as cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime, and bullying. He encouraged young Nigerians to believe in themselves and contribute positively to national development.

The 2026 Children’s Day celebration focused heavily on inclusion and protection, with government officials, development partners, and child rights advocates calling for safer schools and stronger support systems for children across the country.
