Eba, Japa, Abi and Other Nigerian Words Added to Oxford Dictionary
The Oxford dictionary recently expanded its lexicon adding over 20 Nigerian originated words and expressions.
Interestingly, every word added to the dictionary includes its pronunciation.
Among the words added are Abi, Eba, 419, Japa, Aghero, Yahoo boy, Area boy, Edo, Gele, Suya, Yarn Dust and more.
Note that these words originated in Nigeria following the everyday lives of the people. They each speak of either street, culture or the influence of pidgin.
However, this announcement was made by one of the English consultants of Oxford dictionary who happens to be a Nigerian; Kingsley Ugwuanyi. He announced the update on Tuesday on his LinkedIn page.
You can say that he is the brain behind the additions as he expressed his excitement in his announcement.
“This time, I not only drafted most of the words, but also had the incredible opportunity to provide their hashtag pronunciations. So, when you explore the OED online and click on the pronunciations you’ll hear my hashtag#voice bringing these words to life ” Ugwuanyi said.
