NLC Declares Nationwide ‘Anti-Telecom Tariff Hike’ Strike
The Nigerian Labour Congress has declared a nationwide anti-telecom tariff hike strike slated to hold on February 4th, 2025.
Nigerian telecom operators earlier requested a 100% tariff hike but the Federal Government approved 50%. Meanwhile, the NLC on 22nd January rejected the 50%, insisting on “5% or nothing”.
In a statement titled; “50% Telecom tariff hike: Another burden too harsh!” the decision of the NLC was disclosed.
The NLC president, Joe Ajaero described the hike as “insensitive, unjustifiable, and a direct assault on Nigerian workers and the general populace, who are already burdened by worsening economic hardship.”
Based on that, the communique issued after National Administrative Council meeting, NAC of the NLC which held on Wednesday stated that the NLC has concluded on a nationwide strike.
“To express our collective opposition to this arbitrary tariff hike, the NLC will embark on a nationwide mass rally on Tuesday, 4 February 2025. The rally will serve as a warning against the dangers of imposing such an unfair increase on a struggling population earning a minimum wage of only N70,000. This is a population that has already endured outrageous petrol price hikes, soaring food costs, increased electricity tariffs, and rising inflation.” He said.
Calling on Nigerian workers and informal sectors, Ajaero called on all NLC affiliates and state councils to start full mobilization.
“Willing civil society allies are also encouraged to join the movement.”
