Access Bank, Tinubu, Macron Others Pay Tribute to Late CEO Herbert Wigwe and Family

Access Bank PLC has paid tribute to the late former CEO Herbert Wigwe who tragically died on 9th February 2024, one year after his demise alongside his family.

The late CEO, his Wife- Doreen Chizoba and their son-Chizzy tragically lost heir lives near Mojave Desert, California in a helicopter crash which involved six victims.

Meanwhile on Sunday, Access Bank took to X to honor their memory.

“Today marks one year since the world stood still for us. On this day, we lost Herbert, Doreen, and Chizi—three remarkable souls who left an indelible mark on our lives and our hearts.

One year later, we still feel the void, but we also feel the weight of their legacy—one that challenges us to be better, do better, and strive for greatness.

As we reflect, we carry forward the values they instilled and honour their memories by walking the path they paved for us. Forever in our hearts.” The tribute from Access Bank on X read.

During the memorial service of the late CEO and his family which held in Eko Hotel on Sunday, 9th February 2025, other respected people of the country also paid their tributes including Tinubu as they reflected on the impact the CEO and his family had on the institution and the community at large.

We lost a man whose presence was larger than life. The pain of their passing still lingers like a wound.

“We would have done anything; we would have done everything to change the turn of events that fateful night. He was not a man of half measure; he was a builder, not just of businesses but of people, of ideas and future. He was a man who lived perpetually, not in the present but in the future. Action, not words, was his language,” Sanwo-Olu paid his tribute.

Represented by the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, Tinubu recounted Wigwe’s contribution to the Nigeria Economy and Education sector through Access Bank and Herbert Wigwe university.

Also, President Macron urged everyone to hold Wigwe’s legacy alive, through his representative.

Furthermore, Pastor Igodalo whose late wife worked with Access Bank under Wigwe recounted how the late CEO was always there to comfort he and his family when she died.
