Suspect Dies in Kwara State Police Custody, Family Accuse Police of Torture

In the early hours of Friday, 20th December 2024, a man named Jimoh reportedly died in pplice custody, in Kwara State.

Mr Jimoh who is said to come from Balogun Fulani Community, Erubu/Asunara, illorin, Kwara State, was allegedly arrested by the police on 19th of December, 2024 for owing someone the sum of N220,000.

Jimoh also known as “Van de sar” was said to have owed one Mr Peter who happens to be an older brother to a police officer and defaulted payment.

However, on the day of Jimoh’s arrest, he was arrested alongside his phone and the sum of N350,000 at 5:30 pm and met his death on the day after, at 7:30pm.

Further explaining the incident in his statement, Jimoh’s brother said that the police had called them to come bail him on the midnight of Friday(20th December) claiming that they(police)didn’t know what was wrong with him.

He also said that they were redirected to the general hospital when they got to the police headquarters.

Concluding his statement, Jimoh’s brother said instead of a hospital, they were made to meet their brother, son, father at the mortuary where he was covered in blood and had clearly been beaten with his head broken.

Additionally, Jimoh’s brother said his brother couldn’t have hung himself to death contrary to the claim of the police as he’s tall.

However, the police, through the PPRO has confirmed in her statement that the police are going to do everything in their power to find out what could have happened to Mr Jimoh Abdulquadri.

On the other hand, the family of the deceased are insisting that the police had broken Jimoh’s head and tortured him really hard leading to his death.
