Obio/Akpor LG Chairman Bans Refilling of Gas Cylinders in Residential Areas After Gas Explosion That Took Many Lives

Recall that recently, gas explosion took the lives of over 18 people including a couple, children and a pregnant woman as they were burnt to ashes. Following that incident therefore, Chijioke Ihunwo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area chairman has placed a ban on the refilling of gas cylinders within residential areas.

In a statement presented to newsmen by an aide to the chairman, Ofonime Okon, one of the victims of the explosion, a girl, died after several attempts to save her life.

Also, the girl’s father who was affected too is still receiving treatment at the hospital.

Speaking on the tragic incident was a relative of the dead girl who prefers to be anonymous, she said the girl was about 8-9years of age.

Nonetheless, the LG chairman on visiting the gas explosion scene and some of the grieving families who either lost their loved ones or had them in the hospital, placed the ban on refilling of gas cylinders.

The chairman also sent his condolence to the families of the victims.

“As a Local Government, we are going to foot the bills of those who are injured and receiving treatment at the hospital. As a responsive administration, we cannot allow our people to suffer this alone, we share in their pains.” The chairman said.

He went further to say that vigilantes would be sent to different streets to ensure compliance to the ban saying it is a means of curbing future occurrence of the incident.

Additionally, Ihunwo said he was calling on the community development committee chairman and youth leaders to join hands in making sure the lives of people and their properties are saved.

“Anyone who goes against the recent rule will be arrested and made to face the law”.
