JUSTIN!! Akara Gains Popularity in Brazil, Earns Annual Festival
Akara, popular Nigerian dish has gained popularity in Brazil as an annual festival for it has emerged called the Acarajé Festival which has attracted tourists form across the world.
Becoming an integral part of the Brazilian cuisine, the deep fried bean cake is one of Africa’s(Especially Nigeria) stable foods which is enjoyed with different other meals.
In Nigeria, Akara can serve as snacks, main meal or a appetizer and it can be served alongside other meals like Akamu(pap), beans, rice, bread, soft drinks and more.
However, TRT afrika has reported that this amazing dish has become popular in Brazil as it has become a popular street food known as Acarajé in the northeastern state of Bahia, Brazil.
According to the report, the Baiana’s women who prepare this amazing dish carry this culinary skills of their ancestors who were previously enslaved.
Furthermore, it is believed that these slaves in question were of the western part of Nigeria, Yoruba before they were abducted and taken to Bahia.
Interestingly, according to the report by TRT afrika, during the most recent Acaraje festival held on 25th of November, 2024, a Brazilian woman identified as Joelice Calvacante narrated how they make their own Acarajé.
“The batter is made from black eyed beans usually blended with onions. The more you mix it, the tastier it becomes. Then you fry the batter with dende oil(red oil), it makes it so crispy so that when you bite, you feel the flavour” she narrated.
However, in Nigeria, the Akara meal can be prepared with either red oil or vegetable oil and each comes with its uniqueness in taste and all.
