Adamawa: Court Sentences Farmer to Death by Hanging For Killing Fulani Herdsman in Self Defense
After 5years, a High Court sitting in Yola has confirmed the sentence of an Adamawa state farmer, Sunday Jackson, to death by hanging for killing a Fulani herdsman in self defense.
According to reports, Jackson’s case has been on since 2020 after he was attacked in his farm by a Fulani herdsman who he overpowered later on in the fight and stabbed him to death with the weapon with which he was attacked.
Despite bearing injuries, the court’s final judgement on Friday, sentenced him to death by hanging. The court said that Jackson should have fled the scene after overpowering his attacker rather than attacking him back.
Earlier on, the defendant testified for himself on February 27 2020 when the case was still fresh and it was adjourned to August 27 2020 for the adoption of final written addresses of the prosecuting counsel and the defense counsel.
However, lingering since then untill now, Jackson’s sentence came as a shock to the society as legal advocates have asked a review of the case before he is executed, to avoid people losing trust in the Nigerian legal system.
The farmer’s supporters have also condemned the judgement of the court and said it is injustice to Jackson.
