JUST IN!! Longest-Serving Death Row Inmate For 4 Decades Receives $1.4m Compensation

An official on Tuesday, has confirmed that a Japanese man —Iwao Hakamada who was wrongly convicted for murder was given $1.4m as compensation for more than 4 decades spent on death row.

Making about 12,500 yen and ($83) per day, Hakamada who is currently 89 years was charged of murder late 1966 and couldn’t be set free even after his sister and others campaigned. He was however, exonerated last year.

While the Shizuoka District Court on Monday, said that the claimant shall be granted 217,362,500 yen, Hakamada’s legal counsel said it was not enough to compensate for all the years he spent behind bars where he was constantly threatened with execution. He also stated that his client struggled with mental illness while at it.

In last September, the court had ruled the claimant innocent in a retrial stating that the investigating police officer had tampered with evidence. The court also confirmed that the former boxer had faced inhumane interrogations just to force false confessions from him which he later withdrew.
