Igbo Biz Man Collapses in Court After He Was Arraigned For Failure to Declare $299,000
A businessman, Sunday Okorie who was arraigned before the Federal High Court of Lagos on Tuesday, has collapsed on Wednesday while standing in the dock.
The case was presented before Justice Deinde Dipeolu on Tuesday where Okorie pleaded not guilty to the charges of failing to declare $299,000 and being in possession of counterfeit foreign currency.
The EFCC lawyer told the court that Okorie hid the $299,000, $250 counterfeit($50 notes), and €100 inside relaxer containers and passed through the NCS at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja on March 19, 2025 and brought them to Nigeria knowing they’re fake.
However, when the case was resumed on Wednesday, Okorie’s lawyer, Uche Okoronkwo said his client wanted to plead not guilty after he was remanded the previous day and the case adjourned to Wednesday.
He further urged the court to let the charge be read to his client of which the EFCC lawyer, Chineye Okezie did.
She read that since the defendant decided to plead not guilty to the first and second counts, third and Fourth should be cancelled—the judge agreed.
However, when the registrar was about reading the first and second counts to Okorie and asked if he understood English, he was mute and the next thing, he collapsed.
Following the sudden collapses, Me. Okorie’s wife and child started crying and praying to God in the court room.
