Whether Police, Magistrate, Whoever - Farotimi Vows to Sue Those Responsible For His Remand

Whether Police, Magistrate, Whoever – Farotimi Vows to Sue Those Responsible For His Remand

Dele Farotimi has vowed to take legal action against everyone who had a hand in his arrest and detention over a defamation law suit.

Although the case, which was filed by senior lawyer, Afe Babalola — has been withdrawn —  Faratimi has vowed to take up the matter to court as he stated that powers of the state were perverted in pursuit of a private cause.

In his appearance on Channels Television on Sunday Politics, Farotimi who reasserted that he was always at peace stated that “some people will account for my incarceration, but that is not a matter for banter.”

“To be frank with you, when you use the word peace, let me continue to reassert that I was always at peace.

“But when it comes to demanding an account of those who have perverted the powers of the state in pursuit of a private cause, you can be certain of one thing: some people will account for my incarceration, but that is not a matter for banter. That is something for the courts to decide.

“So even though the criminal suit has been withdrawn, the civil suits are there, and what I would like to do in response to my incarceration is another ball game entirely, but you can take it to the bank: I will certainly be demanding an account from those who sent me to prison,” the human rights lawyer stated.

However, when he was asked whom exactly he was going to sue Farotimi said he was not sure yet but it could be the police who arrested or the magistrate.

“Whether it’s the police that I have to be sued, whether it’s the magistrate who sent me to prison, whether it’s the persons who wrote the petition, whether it’s whoever, but somebody would explain,” he said.

In December 2024, Farotimi was arrested for Defamation following comments in his book “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System” —after he was arrested in Lagos and later taken to Ekiti State; where the charge was slapped to his face and the court ordered that he be remanded for 21 days.

However, Babalola would later withdraw the case in a bid to end the dispute —after Dele was granted N50m and N30m bail on different occasions —but Farotimi has said he would still press.
