We Have Received Reports – Reps Summon WAEC to Appear Within 24 Hours Or…
The Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies under the federal House of Representatives have demanded that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) appears before it within 24-hours and explain.
This is concerning the recent lags surrounding the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The committee chairman, Hon. Oboku Abonsizibe Oforji, disclosed this on Thursday giving WAEC untill Friday, May 30, 2025 to appear after it ignored the earlier invitation. The chairman stated that the panel had summoned WAEC to explain widespread complaints and irregularities reported during the ongoing exams.
He further explained that the invitation was extended to WAEC on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, to appear on Thursday, May 29, and explain the issues concerning the examination only for the council to be absent during the hearing.
“The examinations have been riddled with serious irregularities. We’ve received reports of students writing exams as late as midnight in some centres across the country.
“The House deemed it necessary to summon WAEC to explain these developments and the trauma candidates are currently facing. Ironically, WAEC responded this morning, saying they couldn’t appear due to their involvement in the exams. But that is precisely why we need them here.
“Our intention is not to witch-hunt WAEC but to seek answers that will calm public anxiety and ensure these challenges don’t recur. WAEC has conducted exams for decades, yet we have never experienced this level of disorganization,” Uforji stated.
He however, noted that should WAEC fail to appear, the house would use its constitutional powers to compel them to comply.
