Abians to Assess Governance Progress As “State Of The New Abia” Town Hall Kicks Off June 12
As part of efforts to foster transparency, accountability, and civic engagement in governance, Abia citizens are set to hold a Mid-Term Assessment Town Hall to evaluate the progress of the New Abia agenda, two years into the current administration.
The event, themed “State of the New Abia: Promoting Accountability, Transparency and Civic Engagement,” will hold on Thursday, June 12, 2025, coinciding with Democracy Day, at 8 PM WAT via Facebook Live.
With the central focus on “Mid-Term Assessment of Governance in Abia State,” the session will serve as an opportunity for the public to interrogate the state of governance, leadership quality, and socio-economic development in Abia.
A distinguished panel of discussants drawn from various sectors of the state will lead the conversation:
Hon. Obinna Oriaku — Former Commissioner for Finance, Abia State
Mr. Ifeanyi Okali — Journalist, CEO of ABN TV
Kingsley Ekejiuba — Founder, Progressive Abia Youths
Hon. Jerry Uzosike — Member, Abia State Local Government Service Commission
The session will be moderated by Comrade Honest Ofor.
According to the organisers, the essence of the forum is to provide citizens with a platform to objectively interrogate the performance of the state government, encourage constructive feedback, and promote civic participation.
“The beauty of every democracy is the opportunity it offers for constant engagement and continuous interrogation of the quality of leadership,” the organisers stated. “After two years in office, it is appropriate for citizens to objectively assess the state of the New Abia. Is it a mere political slogan, or has the governance delivered tangible progress that marks a departure from the past?”
Participants and viewers will explore critical questions, including:
Has there been significant socio-economic transformation in the state?
How well has the government addressed issues of transparency and accountability?
Is the promise of a New Abia translating into practical improvements in the lives of citizens?
The forum marks the beginning of a series of citizen-led town hall meetings aimed at strengthening public oversight and fostering a culture of transparency in governance.
“This is about giving the people a voice, promoting accountability, and ensuring that the New Abia agenda remains people-driven,” the organisers added.
Citizens are encouraged to participate actively in the conversation, which will be broadcast live on Facebook. The organisers also invited everyone to join the conversation in a “frank and convivial atmosphere”—and humorously advised them to come prepared with questions—and even some popcorn.
