Boniface Not Retiring From Super Eagle, Was ‘Catching Cruise’
Nigerian football star and Bayer 04 Leverkusen striker, Victor Boniface, was reportedly just having fun with the talk about retiring from Super Eagles.
Last week, the strike had made a post on his social media page announcing his retirement after Nigeria scored 1-1 draw against Russia in an international friendly match.
The announcement had sparked reactions among fans and football lovers.
However, the post has now been deleted with a source revealing that the strike was only catching cruise with the post and did not mean it.
“Proud to play for my country, and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment — the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot,” the post had read.
Meanwhile, according to the punch newspapers revealing that a close source to the player had told them he did not mean it, the source said the 24-year old is fond of catching cruise like that.
The source said; “He was just cruising the way he does.”
“Boniface didn’t mean any of that. He must have seen the reaction that followed it and he deleted it as well. He has just started, and the aim is to achieve something with Nigeria.”
In 2023/2024, Boniface teamed with Bayer Leverkusen. Since then, the striker reportedly missed the 2023 AFCON following a major abductor injury on the eve of the tournament in Ivory Coast.
Following the many Injuries including the one he sustained during the 2025 AFCON against Rwanda in Uyo, many have suggested that the retirement might be true following the numerous injuries.
Boniface has played 13 games for Nigeria without scoring but in the club, the player has played 19 league games and scared eight goals.
Meanwhile, while he played for Nigeria, Boniface only had only one assist but in club level, he had two assists.
In the last game on 6th June, 2025, before he the post about his retirement, Victor played for Nigeria against Russia for 61 minutes, had only 1 shot, scored no goals with no assists.
On the other hand, some other sources suggested that the retirement announcement might have come from a place of frustration following the last outing against Russia which might have been challenging to him.
