Kogi Polytechnic Withdraws 273 Students, Expels 6 Over Malpractice
Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has initiated the withdrawal of 273 students and expelled six others over examination malpractices.
The decision was taken when the board considered and approved the first semester results for the 2024/2025 academic session.
In a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Uredo Omale, on Monday, he disclosed that the board had reached the agreement during the 120th meeting on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
In the statement, the DPRP said students from 20 departments and 42 programmes were affected, including Business Administration, Accountancy, Fine Art, Building Technology, Civil Engineering and Computer Science, Animal Health and Production, Library Science, Mass Communication, Office Technology and Management.
“The chairman of the board, Prof Salisu Ogbo Usman, commended members of the Academic Board Result Verification Committee, led by the Deputy Rector, Dr Samuel Taiwo Olowo, for due diligence on the results and charged them to sustain the tempo,” the statement read in part.
The board chairman decried the poor performance of some students and withdrew them. He lamented that they could not do better despite providing a conducive atmosphere for learning.
Six students were expelled from the polytechnic for engaging in examination misconduct and related offences.
The board approved the expulsion expressing satisfaction with the reports presented by the Central Examination Misconduct Committee led by Dr (Mrs) Grace Ehimony.
In the report, one Daniel Onuche Gabriel (2024/HND/BUS/026) from the Department of Business Administration and Yaro Abdullahi Nma (2024/ND/ACCT/081) from the Department of Accountancy were expelled for impersonation. Their offence fell contrary to the Section 4:35 (19) of the 2021 Revised Edition of the Students’ Information Handbook.
Also, Jaja Julietu (2022/ND/MAS/098), Usman Abdulgeniyu (2022/ND/MAS/015), Gimba Aminat (2022/ND/MAS/026/ and Otitoju Taiwo Timilehin (2023/ND/MAS/161), all from Department of Mass Communication, were approved for expulsion, after they were caught with extraneous materials during examination.
According to the 2021 Revised Edition of the Students’ Information Handbook of the institution, the above offense contravened the Section 4.35 (9) .
Prof Usman lauded the committee and others for a thorough job and urged the committees to maintain the synergy to make decisive resolutions capable of sustaining the quality of teaching and learning at the polytechnic.
He pledged commitment to make reforms beneficial to the school just as he promised the board that the management is not relenting.
