EFCC Moves to Appeal Fayose’s Discharge
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) has disclosed plans to appeal the judgment of the Federal High Court in Lagos wherein the former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose was discharged and acquitted of his money laundering charges.
NEWSMAXNG reports that on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Fayose in a ruling by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, was discharged of all money laundering charges.

The EFCC had filed a charge against the ex-governor on 11-count charges bordering on money laundering alongside his company, Spotless Investment Limited.
Fayose was charged of theft of N6.9bn during his time as Ekiti State governor; he served as a governor between 2003 and 2007, and again from 2014 to 2018.
In the court on Wednesday, the defendants counsel had states that the evidence the EFCC had against Fayose could not be verified so they were not substantive which led to the charges dismissal.
Meanwhile, the EFCC in reaction via a statement by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, on Wednesday said it is currently studying the judgment and has begun the process of filing an appeal.
The statement party read, “Sequel to the judgment of Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, acquitting and discharging a former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose from an alleged money laundering case preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Commission wishes to state that it is already studying the ruling and preparing for an appeal.
“The EFCC reaffirms its commitment to the rule of law as it briefs its counsel to appeal the judgment.”
