Speed Darlington Sues NAPTIP N3bn for Declaring him Wanted

Controversial Nigerian singer, Darlington Achakpo Okoye, a.k.a. Speed Darlington (Akpi) has filed a N3bn lawsuit against the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for declaring him wanted.

The lawsuit was filed by the artist’s attorneys in an Abuja Court on July 9, 2025, wherein he demanded a N3 billion settlement for damages.

Speed Darlington is insisting that the declaration against him by NAPTIP was defamatory.

The suit partly read; “A DECLARATION that the very act of declaring the Applicant WANTED with the caption WANTED BY NAPTIP via publications made by the Respondents on all its social media handles and by pasting on or about the 27th day of June, 2025 and subsequent publications and circulation in many Newspapers in both Print and electronic Edition without any prior order or leave of a Court of competent jurisdiction to that effect is unlawful, illegal, wrongful, ultra vires, unconstitutional and constitutes a flagrant violation of the Fundamental rights of the Applicant to personal liberty, private and family life, freedom of movement and right not to be subjected to inhuman treatment and degrading treatment.”

Recall that the agency on June 27, announced that the singer was wanted rape, cyberbullying and cyberstalking.

The declaration was posted on the agency’s official Instagram account.

It read: “WANTED BY NAPTIP. Darlington Okoye, aka Speed Darlington, is wanted in connection with alleged offences including rape, cyberbullying and cyberstalking. Anyone with credible information on his whereabouts is urged to contact NAPTIP immediately,” with a poster bearing the singer’s picture attached.

However, Darlington is arguing that the declaration was baseless and has ruined his reputation and safety.

Therefore, he is requesting the court to issue a perpetual injunction restraining NAPTIP from enforcing or acting on the contents of the June 27 publication.

Meanwhile, recall that the singer had, in a viral live video, disclosed that he raped a minor and saw her blood which triggered netizens, some of whom insisted that the issue needed to be investigated whether it was for content or not.

Consequently, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) pushed the case to NAPTIP for further investigation.

Meanwhile, Darlington had claimed that the video and all he said we’re for content and nothing serious, a claim to which NAPTIP turned deaf ears.

After saying that the video was his own way of promoting his videos and songs, the singer is now requesting compensation from the agency for the publication which he said dented his image and reputation.

Now, the singer is urging the court to have NAPTIP issue a public apology to him and permanently restrain it and its affiliates from acting on the wanted declaration.
