Nwifuru Never Asked FG to Restrict Use of Social Media – Enthusiast Says

An Ebonyi state political Enthusiast has debunked viral claims that Ebonyi state governor, Francis Nwifuru urged the federal government to restrict use of the internet in Nigeria.

Reports had gone viral alleging that Governor Nwifuru urged president Tinubu to curb misinformation by restricting use of the internet.

However, in a post on his personal Facebook page, the man, @Sunday Nwoke Ebonyi claimed that he was present at the event where it was alleged his Excellency made the comment.

He described the reports as fake and part of the clarion call to sanitize the media space against fake information

He wrote; “His excellency the Governor of Ebonyi state Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru never called on the federal government to gang up or ban social media .

“For the record, I was at the event and he never said a thing like that ,he only adviced the federal government to Strengthen laws regulating fake information circulation on the media space owing to some maliciousness perpetrated by some users .

“He made reference to how someone will be at the comfort of his home to announce the death of another fellow when such never happened, he has been a victim of such vindictive maliciousness and if you’ve been a victim of defamation and fake information you understand the burden.

“During the town hall meeting yesterday and two days working visit of the honorable minister of information Mohammed Idris Malagi in Ebonyi,he seized the opportunity to further adviced Ebonyi youths to be more focused on positive enterprises that will better their lives instead of using the media space for smear campaigns and defamatory propaganda.

“The news making round in some local tabloids and blogs is nothing but figment of imagination of naysayers and rabble rousers whose stock in trade is to misinform the public with a twisted narrative, this kind of misleading information is part of the clarion call to sanitize the media space against fake information.”
