Arise News Anchor, Sommie Shot Dead by Robbers in Her Apartment
The Nigerian media industry is mourning on monday following the tragic death of Arise news anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu at 29 years.
Sommie, as she was fondly called, was a news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel, and was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.
According to the channel in a statement confirming the incident, Sommie was attacked in the early hours of Monday.
Describing her as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family” whose voice “engaged and connected with our viewers, the channel added; “Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”
Maduagwu was born on December 26, 1995.
She was a trained lawyer before pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. She quickly became a respected and vibrant presence on Nigerian television, admired for her warm on-screen personality and professionalism.
Her colleagues and management have consoled her family, saying her passing is a devastating loss not only to ARISE News but to the broader Nigerian media community.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police have since launched an investigation into the incident.
