Abakaliki, Ebonyi State – Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone, has been named the 2025 Best Senator of the Year in a  ceremony organised by NewsmaxNG on Friday.

The award recognises his impactful performance in office, notable empowerment programmes, and outstanding service to his constituents less than a year into his tenure.

The award was presented in his country home when Senator Nwebonyi welcomed the honour with gratitude, acknowledging the recognition and the team that has supported his work.

“I never knew about the assessment but the fact they say speaks for itself,” Nwebonyi said during his acceptance remarks. “Within six months in office, we launched a really outstanding empowerment programme that empowered over 200 constituents of mine in Ebonyi North senatorial zone. Some got keke, some got mini buses and what have you.”

His office has also initiated extensive scholarship support for students across the zone, awarding more than 500 scholarships to indigent youths studying in institutions both within and outside Ebonyi State. These beneficiaries are drawn from universities in Lagos, Imo, Enugu and other states, reflecting the senator’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities for less privileged students in his constituency.

Beyond empowerment and education, Senator Nwebonyi highlighted significant progress in infrastructure development, saying: “Outside of that, we have also done significantly well in the area of infrastructure. We have completed 7.5 km of concrete roads spread across the zone. No senator has ever achieved this feat.” He added that the quality of the roads was a clear indication of his team’s preparedness and commitment to sustainable transformation.

His efforts dovetail with previous initiatives in the senatorial district, including the construction of major community facilities and infrastructure projects that support social and economic development. The senator has previously commenced work on a N400 million ultra-modern civic centre, underscoring his broader development agenda.

Senator Nwebonyi also took time to thank his supporters, party members, and constituents for their unwavering trust. “To my supporters, thank you for believing in me. I promise to do more,” he stated, affirming that he remains capable and committed to working closely with Governor Francis Nwifuru to further the development of Ebonyi North and the entire state.

Governor Nwifuru and other notable leaders have in the past commended the senator’s work, especially his empowerment programmes that have provided tools and resources for youths and small-business owners, as well as his contributions toward education and infrastructure growth.

As he received the award, Senator Nwebonyi reiterated his dedication to improving the quality of life for his constituents and pledged that “this recognition will spur us on to do even more for the people of Ebonyi North.”

When asked about his political future ahead of the 2026 elections, Senator Nwebonyi affirmed his intention to seek re-election, expressing confidence in his capacity to deliver even more dividends of democracy.

“Definitely, by His grace, we will run again. And as for what my constituents should be expecting in 2026, they should expect more roads, more bursary awards for students, farm inputs for farmers, and interventions for the sick — all of which I have consistently done,” he said.

The senator added that he remains committed to improving the welfare of his people, stressing that his focus would continue to be on people-centred development. “I will continue doing my best to make my people happy,” he assured.
