Okon-Aku Ohafia Crisis: Why Governor Alex Otti’s Immediate Intervention Is Critical to Restoring Peace

Peace may remain elusive in Okon-Aku community of Ohafia Local Government Area unless the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, urgently intervenes and orders an independent review of the crisis rocking the community.

As journalists, our constitutional role as the Fourth Estate of the Realm is to act as watchdogs of society, speak truth to power, and amplify the voices of the people especially in moments of injustice, conflict, and loss of lives.

The ongoing crisis in Okon-Aku, which has resulted in the death of an Abia indigene and the destruction of properties, underscores the need for decisive and impartial intervention by the state government. Credible information from stakeholders indicates that the conflict is deeply linked to the purported appointment of the Ezeogo of Okon-Aku, a process many allege did not follow established procedures and extant laws governing traditional institutions in Abia State.

Of serious concern is the repeated mention of the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, in relation to the crisis. Official letters reportedly endorsed by the Deputy Governor suggest that his office is fully aware of developments in the community, raising questions that deserve transparent clarification.

After engaging with stakeholders from both factions, it is evident that the arrests carried out so far by security agencies are perceived by the community as one-sided. Those arrested are reportedly members of the family of the late Igwe Akuma, while no arrests have been made from the opposing camp, an imbalance that continues to fuel tension and distrust.

More troubling are allegations that security personnel attached to the Deputy Governor were involved in the arrest of Chief Mrs. Grace Udensi, who was allegedly handcuffed, conveyed in the Deputy Governor’s official vehicle, detained at the Ohafia Divisional Police Headquarters, and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). These claims, if true, demand urgent clarification and investigation.

There is also growing speculation that the arrest of Chief Mrs. Udensi may be politically motivated, given reports that she intends to contest an election in 2027. While this remains an allegation, it raises legitimate concerns about possible intimidation and suppression of political participation. Time, however, will reveal the truth.

With 2026 marking a critical phase of political activities in Abia State, unresolved crises such as that of Okon-Aku Ohafia, if poorly managed, risk escalating beyond control.

The path to lasting peace lies in fairness, transparency, and justice. An independent panel of inquiry, set up by Governor Alex Otti, would not only help uncover the truth but also restore public confidence and prevent further bloodshed.

Abia needs peace. Okon-Aku deserves justice.
