DAVID UMAHI — BEFORE POLITICS AND NOW

A Story of Engineering, Enterprise, and Power.
Before rising to national prominence as Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Engr, David Nweze Umahi was already a well-known figure in Uburu, his hometown in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, as well as in the broader Ebonyi landscape.
BEFORE POLITICS
David Umahi’s journey began not in the corridors of power but in the construction and business sectors. A trained civil engineer, he earned a reputation for being both technically skilled and business-savvy.

Entrepreneurship:
Umahi established several businesses long before joining politics. He owned a hotel in Uburu, which became a notable hospitality spot in the area, as well as petrol stations in both Uburu and Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
Engineering Career:
He co-founded Brakins Nigeria Limited, a construction firm, where he served as General Manager and later as Chairman/CEO. Through this firm, he handled numerous civil engineering and building projects, building a solid reputation as a hands-on engineer and contractor.

Community Standing:
In his hometown, he was popularly known as “Engr. Dav.” — not yet as a politician, but as a man of means, vision, and engineering prowess. His businesses provided employment for many locals, and his influence grew organically through hard work and philanthropy.

POLITICAL RISE AND NATIONAL INFLUENCE
David Umahi’s formal political journey began in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP):
He served as Acting State Chairman of the PDP,
Later became Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State (2011–2015) under Governor Martin Elechi,
And was subsequently elected Governor of Ebonyi State (2015–2023), serving two terms.
During his time as governor, Umahi embarked on ambitious infrastructure projects — constructing roads with concrete pavement technology, building flyovers, and modernising the state capital. He branded himself as a “construction governor”, emphasizing engineering precision and durability in road projects.
In 2020, Umahi defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for the Southeast to align politically with the centre. His defection made national headlines, as he was one of the most prominent PDP governors to switch parties during that period.
NOW: HONOURABLE MINISTER OF WORKS

In August 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed David Umahi as Nigeria’s Minister of Works. His appointment was widely seen as strategic, given his engineering background and the government’s focus on massive infrastructure development.
Since assuming office, Umahi has:
Pushed for the adoption of concrete technology on major roads to ensure durability.
Critiqued contractors who resist change, positioning himself as a reformer within the ministry.
Taken on bold projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, which has generated both praise and controversy.
Umahi’s leadership style remains assertive and unapologetic, as seen in his public exchanges — notably the heated interview with Arise TV’s Rufai Oseni, where his strong personality was on full display.

FROM HIS HOME TOWN UBURU TO THE FEDERAL CABINET
David Umahi’s story is one of transition from grassroots entrepreneurship and engineering into the highest levels of Nigerian politics. From owning local businesses in Uburu to sitting at the federal executive table, he embodies a blend of technical skill, political strategy, and bold leadership.
Whether one agrees with his style or not, Engr. Dav has become a defining figure in Nigeria’s infrastructural conversation.
