Senate Calls Emergency Sitting Over Electoral Act Amendment Dispute

The Senate has fixed an emergency plenary session for Tuesday, February 10, 2026, summoning all lawmakers back to the chamber.

The decision was conveyed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, who said senators have been formally notified to attend the sitting.

According to the notice, Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the reconvening of the upper legislative chamber for the special session, which is expected to begin at 12 noon.

The development comes shortly after the Senate concluded deliberations on amendments to the Electoral Act last week. During the debate, lawmakers voted against a proposal that would have made the electronic transmission of polling unit results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s viewing portal compulsory and immediate.

Instead, the chamber retained a provision that allows the transfer of results electronically only after votes have been counted and declared at polling stations, leaving the process at the discretion of electoral officials.

The rejection of the mandatory clause has sparked criticism from civil society organisations and opposition voices, who argue that the move weakens transparency and could undermine confidence in the electoral process.

However, Akpabio has defended the Senate’s position, maintaining that lawmakers did not oppose electronic transmission outright and insisting the decision should not be misinterpreted.

Observers say Tuesday’s emergency session may provide an opportunity for further deliberation on the contentious amendment, following public pressure and the possibility of legal action from stakeholders. The outcome of the sitting could influence ongoing debates about electoral reforms and safeguards for credible elections in the country.
