FG Reopens Nigeria–Niger Border

The Federal Government has officially reopened the Nigeria–Niger Republic border at the Kamba corridor in Kebbi State, restoring cross-border movement and commercial activities along the route.

The development follows the recent approval by President Bola Tinubu for the resumption of operations along the Nigeria–Benin Republic border through the Tsamiya corridor, part of broader efforts to strengthen regional trade, promote economic cooperation, and facilitate the free flow of legitimate goods and services within West Africa.

Speaking at the reopening ceremony in Kamba on Monday, the Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kebbi Area Command, Mahmoud Ibrahim, said the agency was prepared to enforce the directive and ensure smooth operations at the border.

According to him, customs officers have been deployed to guarantee that lawful trade and business activities resume without disruption.

“We are carrying out the President’s directive through the Comptroller-General of Customs. Our personnel are ready to support legitimate trade and ensure seamless commercial operations through this corridor,” he said.

Community leaders welcomed the decision, describing it as a boost for local economies. The District Head of Kamba, Muhammad Shiko Kamba, thanked the Federal Government, noting that the reopening would help residents regain their sources of income and stimulate business activities in the area.

He said the move would not only benefit the host community but also contribute to the broader economic growth of Kebbi State and the country.

Also speaking, the Chief of Staff to the Kebbi State Governor, Nasiru Idris, Barrister Attahiru Maccido, characterised the reopening of both the Tsamiya and Kamba routes as a significant step for trade and economic development across the region.

He, however, urged traders and security agencies to operate responsibly, stressing the need for transparency and compliance with regulations.

While expressing optimism about increased business opportunities and job creation, particularly for young people, he warned that only lawful activities should be conducted at the borders.

The restored operations at the Kamba crossing are expected to improve trade volumes, support border communities, and deepen Nigeria’s economic ties with neighbouring countries in the sub-region.
