Arik Air Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Benin After Engine Fault, Passengers Safe

An Arik Air aircraft operating a domestic route from Lagos to Port Harcourt was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Benin on Wednesday after the crew detected a problem with one of its engines mid-flight.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the Boeing 737-700, with registration number 5N-MJF, experienced an engine anomaly while cruising.

According to the agency, the pilots observed abnormal engine readings and, in line with safety procedures, shut down the affected engine as a precaution before diverting the flight to the nearest suitable airport.

The aircraft landed safely at Benin Airport without incident. All passengers and crew members disembarked normally, and no injuries were reported.

Initial checks carried out after landing reportedly showed visible damage to the affected engine.

The NSIB said it has launched an investigation into the incident in accordance with international aviation standards. A team has been dispatched to secure the aircraft, gather evidence, interview crew members and witnesses, and retrieve flight data and cockpit voice recordings.

The bureau added that it is working alongside the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Arik Air, and other relevant stakeholders to determine what caused the fault.

A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, while a final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.

Authorities reassured the public that passenger safety remains the top priority.
