‘We’re Grassroots, Not Government-Made’ — City Boy Movement
The City Boy Movement, a political support group linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed allegations circulating online that it is an elitist, government-backed platform.
In a statement released on Saturday by its National Secretariat and shared via its verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the group said it was responding to a viral video that it described as misleading and inaccurate in its portrayal of the organisation’s origins and purpose.
According to the statement, the Movement was established in 2022 as a voluntary civic platform aimed at mobilising support for democratic participation and national development. It stressed that it was neither created by the government nor operated as a state initiative at any time.
The organisation pushed back against suggestions that its membership is limited to a privileged class, insisting that its support base reflects a broad cross-section of Nigerians.
“Our identity is not shaped by wealth or social status,” the statement said, adding that its members include traders, artisans, farmers, students, professionals, entrepreneurs and business leaders.
The group further argued that financial success should not be equated with detachment from public responsibility, noting that civic engagement remains the right of every citizen regardless of economic standing.
Addressing the phrase “City Boy,” often associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Movement said the expression represents certain values rather than a social label.
It explained that within the organisation, the term symbolises resilience, boldness, courage and a commitment to transformative leadership, rather than class distinction or exclusivity.
Reiterating its objectives, the Movement said it remains focused on mobilising citizens particularly young Nigerians toward constructive democratic involvement, entrepreneurship and national unity.
The statement also underscored the group’s commitment to issue-based discourse and reform-oriented leadership, while cautioning against narratives it believes could deepen divisions.
According to the organisation, meaningful progress can only be achieved through collaboration across regions, professions and social backgrounds.
The City Boy Movement concluded by affirming its dedication to responsible civic participation and nation-building, stating that it would prioritise substance and development over what it described as sensational or divisive narratives.
