BREAKING!!! Ebonyi Police Arrest Seven Over Kidnap, Death of Ex-Deputy Governor’s Father
The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested seven suspects in connection with the kidnapping and killing of HRH Eze Francis Igwe, a traditional ruler in Ebonyi State.
In a press release dated March 6, 2026, and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Joshua Ukandu, the police confirmed that operatives carried out an intensive operation following the monarch’s abduction on March 1, 2026.
The statement, referenced AZ.:5200/EBS/PPRO/VOL.9/42, said the swift response by security operatives led to the arrest of two suspects believed to be members of the kidnapping syndicate.
Newsmaxng reported that the monarch, who is the father of Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State (2015–2023), was abducted by gunmen before his killing on his way to church on Sunday, 1st March, 2026.
During interrogation, the two arrested suspects reportedly confessed that the traditional ruler was killed on March 2. They also volunteered to lead operatives to the gang’s hideout to help recover his remains.
However, the operation turned violent when other members of the gang opened fire on the security team as they approached the location. The operatives responded, overpowering the attackers.
“However, upon approaching the hideout, other members of the gang opened fire on the operatives. The operatives responded with superior firepower, which overwhelmed the gang.
“In the course of the confrontation, one of the hoodlums was neutralised, while others fled the scene. Subsequently, seven additional suspects were arrested, and one locally made pistol was recovered from the suspects,” the command stated.

The remains of the late monarch were later recovered and taken to the morgue for autopsy.
The police said the suspects are currently in custody and that efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the gang. They will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
