Family Demands Justice Over Death of UNIZIK Student After Hostel Denied Access to Diabetes Medicine
Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and the general public have demanded justice over the death of a 100-level student of the institution’s law faculty.
Miss Isabella Chioma Ajana was reportedly a newly admitted student of the institution in the aforementioned faculty and a member of the Justitia chambers before she passed.
According to the information gathered by NEWSMAXNG, Chioma who was reportedly diabetic had lost the key to her hostel room on 28 June 2025.
However, the hostel which is independent of the school is said to have a standard policy that demands each student to pay N40k whenever they lost their room key.
According to the report, Chioma and her roommates were supposed to deposit a total of N120k to get another key before they could access their room, an amount they could not immediately raise.
It was said that the deceased and her friends begged the hostel portress on duty at the time who wouldn’t give them listening ear. They had asked to access the room and get Chioma’s insulin since she is diabetic; a condition which was not hidden.
However, the portress blatantly refused which led Chioma to squat at her friend’s for a few days from 28 June to 30 June 2025.
While the portress on duty at Elmada Hostel refused them access to Chioma’s insulin, her friends were pushed to involve another portress who escalated the matter and led the friends into the room.
However, by the time the medication was recovered, Ajana’s condition had gotten worse and she was rushed to the school medical centre.
Her condition was reportedly beyond the expertise of the personnels at the centre and she was later transferred to the state teaching hospital where she died later on Friday, 4 July 2025.
Friends, classmates and family of miss Ajana have petitioned the institution to investigate the matter and ensure justice is served and those who should, are punished.
Meanwhile, in a Thursday statement signed by the school director, information and public-relations, Njelita Louis O., the institution disclosed that investigations were ongoing and the outcome would be duly communicated.
The school management frowned at the incident which it described as “distressing” and stated that it was working to get to the root of the case.
The statement read in part; “We understand the anxiety and uncertainty this has caused and our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our students.
“The management acknowledges the issue at hand with great concern and is leaving no stone unturned in taking immediate steps to address them.
“Currently, there is an ongoing investigation into the circumstances that led to the demise of our dear student.”
The management pledged commitment to transparency in the ongoing investigation just as it promised to keep the public and the school community informed of the outcome.
It further disclosed that the institution is “beaming its searchlight on the operation, management, security and the welfare of the students living in Elmada hostel (where the student was locked out and died later).
The institution further urged the public to remain calm as it promised to handle the issue at hand with utmost care and would not appreciate any actions that may cause a breach in peace.
