The government of Kano State under Governor Alhaji Abba Yusuf has began a full-scale investigation into the State Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi over an alleged involvement in the controversial bail of a suspected drug baron, Sulaiman Wawu.

Governor Yussuf gave this order after the public criticized the bail of the drug baron. Also, the uproar rose after the Commissioner’s name was found featured in official documentation reportedly used to secure the suspect’s release.

In a Saturday statement issued by the Governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the government disclosed that it was treating the issue with all seriousness.

It strictly warned against any attempt to shield individuals suspected of sabotaging the fight against drug-related crimes noting that such act would not be tolerated.

Therefore, to have an effective operation, the governor, according to the statement, constituted a special committee to investigate the matter.

“To ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry, Governor Yusuf has constituted a special investigative committee to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and recommend appropriate measures,” the statement read.

The committee is chaired by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters, Aminu Hussain.

Other members of the panel include: Hamza Haladu; Hamza Nuhu Dantani; Alhaji Abdullahi Mahmoud Umar; Maj. Gen. Sani Muhammad (retd.); Kabiru Said Dakata and Hajiya Bilkisu Maimota – Secretary.

Governor Yusuf, frowned at the rate at which public office holders exploit their position and power to commit crimes.

Expressing concern over the power abuse, the governor stated that his administration would not tolerate any act compromising the safety of the citizens.

He pledged commitment to fighting against drug trafficking and abuse.

He said; “Let it be known that our administration will not condone any act that compromises the safety and wellbeing of our citizens. We are fully committed to the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and abuse, and anyone found culpable—regardless of their position—will face the full weight of the law.”

However, as at the time of reporting this, the Commissioner for Transport is yet to make an official statement.

Meanwhile, governor Yusuf’s investigative panel were mandated to thoroughly investigate the matter and report any findings.

Dan Wawu, the drug baron in question was said to have been arrested for trafficking narcotics only to be suddenly released later.

Meanwhile, some members of the public stated that the release involved the interference of some politicians including the commissioner being probed.

Governor Yusuf’s directive on the probe on his Commissioner seems to signal commitment and devotion to transparent leadership as he lately campaigns against drug abuse and criminality, particularly among youths.

During the course of the campaign, the governor emphasized that drug trafficking and abuse are the major threats to the future and security of Kano state as he pledged commitment to combing them.
