Governor Suspends Health Commissioner After Arresting Journalist (Photo)
The Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has released Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa, who was detained after exposing the deplorable state of Kangiwa General Hospital.
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, revealed on Friday that he was also paid ₦200,000 “for unlawful detention.”
His revelations also prompted the suspension of the Commissioner for Health, Yunusa Isma’il, over dereliction of duty.
It would be recalled that on Wednesday, journalist Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa, was detained after releasing a video showing the poor conditions at Kangiwa General Hospital.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, depicted patients lying on bare metal beds without mattresses, sparking public outrage and renewed scrutiny of the state’s healthcare system.
Previously, SaharaReporters reported that a disturbing video exposed the shocking decay at the hospital, where an elderly patient was seen lying helplessly on a hospital bed without a mattress.
The footage, which has sparked outrage, shows the sick man placed directly on the bare iron frame of a hospital bed.
A narrator in the video lamented the grim reality of the hospital, saying, “In this hospital, there are many things wrong and very frustrating. They claim to be providing healthcare services, yet the reality tells a different story. Imagine an elderly man lying on a sickbed with no mattress, no bedsheet, and no pillow, just the bare iron frame. It is deeply upsetting and unacceptable.”
The footage underscores the lack of basic facilities in the hospital, including beds, mattresses, and essential medical equipment.
On Thursday, Governor Idris suspended the Commissioner for Health, Yunusa Isma’il, over dereliction of duty.
The suspension took immediate effect and was announced in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida.
“The Executive Governor has instructed the suspended Commissioner for Health to justify why further sanctions should not be applied, having disregarded the mandate entrusted to him,” the statement added.
Reacting to the matter, Sowore, in a Facebook post on Friday, said, “The Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has quietly released Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa, after paying ₦200,000 to him for unlawful detention and suspended the Commissioner for Health, Yunusa Isma’il, for dereliction of duty.
“This came only after Kangiwa’s Facebook posts exposed the deplorable state of hospitals. Yet, instead of fixing the problem, the police were first invited to detain him.
“Now you see: it only takes a little effort, driven by courage and sacrifice, to bring us closer to the revolution.”
“Thank you always, our Comrade Dan Bello, for being a leading light. #RevolutionNow #EndBadGovernmentinNigeria,” he added.
