Arise News Anchor, Sommie Shot Dead by Robbers in Her Apartment

‎The Nigerian media industry is mourning on monday following the tragic death of Arise news anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu at 29 years.

‎Sommie, as she was fondly called, was a news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel, and was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.

‎According to the channel in a statement confirming the incident, Sommie was attacked in the early hours of Monday.

‎Describing her as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family” whose voice “engaged and connected with our viewers, the channel added; “Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”

‎Maduagwu was born on December 26, 1995.

‎She was a trained lawyer before pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. She quickly became a respected and vibrant presence on Nigerian television, admired for her warm on-screen personality and professionalism.

‎Her colleagues and management have consoled her family, saying her passing is a devastating loss not only to ARISE News but to the broader Nigerian media community.

‎Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police have since launched an investigation into the incident.
