UK-Based Lecturer Gifts N1m, Laptops to Teachers in Ebonyi State
An Ebonyi-born United Kingdom-based lecturer, Dr. Obinna Otuu, has donated laptops, and cash to teachers in the state.
Otuu is a professor of computer science at the Swansea University, United Kingdom.
During the donation, he called for teachers’ welfare to be prioritized teachers and for learning facilities to be improved in the nation’s basic schools and universities.
He made the call recently during a meeting with teachers and education stakeholders, tagged, in Abakaliki, the state capital.
According to the university don, investing in teachers remained the best in our approach to achieve standardization in Nigeria’s educational system.
He expressed concern that teachers have not been receiving empowerment and adequate training for career growth, urging all hands to be on deck.
“Teachers need some of these basic needs to enhance career and teaching. Such needs include food, clothing and shelters. How many teachers across states can boost of having a house or land property?,” he asked.
He noted that there was always need to recognise the teachers as the driver and the brain box of the society.
Otuu gave out N1 million as gift to one Mrs Alice Awaza, the oldest teacher at the programme who has served her profession for 32 years and is currently a teacher in Ohofia Community Primary school, Ukawu, Onicha LGA.
Awaza thanked the lecturer for the selfless gesture and called for advanced training for teachers in rural areas.
Nine other teachers from different primary and secondary schools received HP laptops each to support their teaching profession.
Also speaking at the event, Prof Daniel Nwibo, Provost, College of Health Science, Ebonyi State University, described teachers as the Builders of the nation.
He therefore, noted that teachers deserve better condition of services, not only in the state but Nigeria at large.
Prof Godwin Onu, a Lecturer in the department of Political Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra, who spoke on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) said it was necessary to address the challenges of ICT in teaching processes in the country.
Onu noted that ICT could make teaching and learning easier and help in bringing more access to global knowledge in educational system.
“Students get learning updates easier. So, government need to enhance teachers capacity through ICT and to enable them meet the global trend in teaching and learning,” he said.
