FG Approves B.Sc AI, 11 Other New Degrees For Universities

The National Universities Commisssion has approved 11 new degree programmes for Nigerian universities including B.Sc AI.

In a statement by the NUC’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, FCVSN, and dated 22 October 2025, the commission stated that “experts in the relevant areas drawn from the Nigerian University System participated in the development of the 70% components of these programmes in March of 2025.”

The statement was addressed to all Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.

“The National Universities Commission is pleased to inform all Nigerian Universities that the Commission has approved thirteen additional programmes to the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).

“Experts in the relevant areas drawn from the Nigerian University System participated in the development of the 70% components of these programmes in March of 2025. The approval of these CCMAS programmes reflects the Commission’s ongoing commitment to strengthening quality assurance mechanisms, enhancing academic relevance, and aligning university education in Nigeria with emerging global trends,” the statement read in part.

The approved programmes included B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence.

Other programmes include;

B.Ed. Classical Christian Education

B.Ed. Human Kinetics (Sport Management)

B.Eng. Geomatics Engineering

B.CHS Community Health Science

B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies

B.Sc. Islamic Economics and Finance

B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology

B.Sc. Telecommunication Science

B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

B.Sc. Cooperative Economics and Management

B.Sc. Nuclear Science

B.Eng. Nuclear Engineering

The commission therefore, requested Universities to;

1. Circulate the approved CCMAS documents to all relevant Faculties, Departments, and Academic Planning units.

2. Ensure that the 30% institutional-based component are developed by universities and align with the provisions of the CCMAS; and

3. Universities that wish to have the programmes in their offerings should commence implementation effective 2026/2027 academic session after Resource Assessment Visit.
