Benue: Troops Arrest Two Herders for Trespassing, Destroying Crops

Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, have arrested two herders for allegedly trespassing on community farmlands and destroying crops during a routine harvest-season patrol in Makurdi, Benue State.

According to a statement signed on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the operation, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the incident occurred on November 20, 2025, when troops deployed at Zongo Akiki intercepted the herders after they allegedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands belonging to local residents.

“In a sustained effort to protect farmers and guarantee food security during the peak of the harvest season, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested two herders who were found trespassing and destroying crops on a community farmland in Makurdi, Benue State.

“The vigilant troops intercepted the two herders after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands belonging to local residents, resulting in damage to crops.

“The swift intervention prevented further destruction and possible confrontation between the herders and the affected farmers. The suspects are currently in custody for further investigation and necessary legal action,” the statement read.

The Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged residents not to take the law into their own hands when disputes arise.

He warned herders to be law-abiding while advising that violence or reprisals only heighten tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence.

He reaffirmed the operation’s commitment to protecting farmlands and ensuring a secure environment for legitimate economic activities.
