US Airstrike in Sokoto: Sowore Condemns Violation of Nigeria’s Sovereignty
Popular Nigerian activist and journalist, Omoyele Sowore has stated that the current leadership of Nigeria is too weak to protect the nation adding that the country’s sovereignty is being eroded.
Reacting to a U.S. airstrike in Sokoto, Omoyele Sowore said in a statement posted on his X page on Friday that the Tinubu-led government is weak and incapable of protecting its citizens.
“I have read reports that the United States government launched attacks on Nigerian soil on Christmas Day, as announced by Donald Trump and the U.S. Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, purportedly targeting terrorist groups within Nigeria,” he wrote.
Sowore, who is also the founder of Sahara Reporters, argued that the government’s official statement issued through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which said the Federal Government was well aware of the airstrike, was merely an attempt at damage control.
He added; “Although the Nigerian government now claims it was aware and describes the operation as a joint effort with vague “international partners,” it is evident that the strikes were carried out without the genuine authority or informed consent of the weaklings masquerading as government under President Bola Tinubu.”
He further maintained that U.S. President Donald Trump does not mean well for Nigeria, noting that the confirmed strike clearly proved this.
“My position remains unchanged. Judging by the nature of the confirmed strike on a village in Sokoto, it is clear that the U.S. President under whose authority this operation occurred neither understands nor genuinely cares about Nigeria or Nigerians,” he said.
According to Sowore, “It is deeply troubling that Nigeria (Africa’s most populous nation) lacks the capable and sovereign leadership required to protect its people and its territory.
“As a result, the country has been reduced to a bystander while its sovereignty is violated under the direction of U.S. President.”
He concluded by reiterating his stand that; “only true, tested, and informed leadership can protect Nigerians—not imperiled, jaundiced neoconservatives operating from Washington, D.C.”
