Kano Commissioner Steps Down, Says Government Has Strayed
A commissioner in Kano State, Yusuf Kofarmata, has stepped down from his position in the State Executive Council, attributing his decision to what he described as a departure from the principles that brought the present administration into office.
Kofarmata made the announcement in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that his resignation was driven by conscience and taken in good faith. He stated that he could no longer continue to serve in an administration he believes has strayed from its founding political ideology.
The former commissioner, who previously oversaw portfolios in the Ministry of Tertiary Education and later the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, expressed appreciation to the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and other political leaders for the opportunity to contribute to public service.
He specifically acknowledged the support of the NNPP’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, whom he said stood by him throughout his tenure.
Despite his resignation, Kofarmata reaffirmed his allegiance to the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya movement, pledging continued loyalty and support.
His exit comes against the backdrop of rising political uncertainty in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s recent departure from the NNPP, a development that has sparked a series of resignations and political repositioning among government appointees and party figures.
In recent days, several individuals associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement have either resigned their appointments or distanced themselves from the state government, citing ideological disagreements and concerns over the administration’s political trajectory.
Kofarmata’s resignation further highlights the growing internal tensions within Kano’s political space as political alignments begin to shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
