IPOB Cancels Monday Sit-at-Home Across South-East

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the immediate termination of its long-running Monday sit-at-home directive across the South-East region.

The group said the order, which takes effect from Monday, February 9, 2026, was issued by its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who urged residents to resume normal daily activities without fear.

In a statement released by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the organisation encouraged people to return to their businesses, schools, offices and other engagements, declaring an end to the weekly shutdown that has disrupted social and economic life in the region.

According to the group, anyone attempting to enforce the sit-at-home going forward would be acting contrary to Kanu’s instructions and the movement’s objectives.

The statement advised citizens to remain calm and law-abiding while also warning of possible attempts by opponents to create confusion or intimidate the public.

IPOB further maintained that state authorities do not have the right to harass or compel traders to close their businesses against their will. It also called for consultation with stakeholders before any market closures, relocations or renovation projects are carried out, including the provision of temporary trading spaces.

Residents were urged to fully resume work and ensure children return to school as part of efforts to restore normalcy across the South-East.

The decision signals a notable change in the group’s approach, bringing an end to the routine Monday restrictions that have, for years, affected commercial and public activities in the area.
