Sanusi II, Bayero, Kwankwaso Hold Rival Eid Prayers in Kano
For the first time in recent years, Kano State witnessed three different Eid-el-Fitr prayers, highlighting growing divisions within its traditional and political leadership.
The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, led one of the prayers at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground around 8:00 a.m. The gathering was attended by top government officials, including Governor Abba Yusuf, Secretary to the State Government Umar Faruq, and Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori. According to a close associate of the Emir, the sermon focused on unity and peaceful coexistence.
At about the same time, the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, held a separate Eid prayer at the Nasarawa Palace. The session, led by Sheikh Kamaluddeen Albasa, emphasised peace, unity, and support for stability in the state. Several notable figures were in attendance, including government officials and associates of the Emir.
In a parallel gathering, Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, observed Eid prayers at his residence mosque along Miller Road. He was joined by key allies, including Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo and other loyalists. His media aide described the event as peaceful and reflective.
The separate prayers reflect lingering tensions in the state, rooted in the 2020 emirate crisis that led to Sanusi II’s removal and Bayero’s installation, as well as the 2024 reinstatement of Sanusi II, which created parallel royal authorities.
Political developments have also contributed to the divide, particularly recent shifts involving the state government.
Traditionally, Eid prayers in Kano have served as a unifying event, bringing together the Emir, political leaders, and residents at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground. The emergence of multiple prayer gatherings marks a notable departure from that long-standing practice, underscoring widening rifts within the state.
