Delta Police Probe Viral Assault on Women in Ozoro During ‘Raping Festival’
Authorities in Delta State have launched an investigation following disturbing viral videos showing women being harassed and assaulted in Ozoro, headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area.
The incident gained national attention after footage circulated online, showing groups of young men chasing, stripping, and physically assaulting women in public spaces, triggering widespread outrage.
Several women were reportedly molested and assaulted by youths during what was described as a local festival in the community. The situation created chaotic scenes, with victims seen crying for help as the attacks unfolded in public.
However, despite the description of the incident as a “raping festival,” there is no verified evidence that such an event is an officially recognised cultural practice in Ozoro or anywhere in Delta State. Available information suggests the violence may have occurred during a gathering that was exploited by some individuals, rather than being an organised or sanctioned event.
The Delta State Police Command has acknowledged the incident and strongly condemned the actions seen in the videos, describing them as criminal, barbaric, and completely inconsistent with any recognised cultural practice. Authorities stressed that no tradition in the state permits such behaviour and vowed that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice.
Community leaders and stakeholders have also distanced the town from the label, stressing that no tradition in the area permits violence or abuse against women.
The development has reignited concerns over public safety at social events, with calls for swift justice and stronger measures to protect women in public spaces.
Investigations are ongoing, and security agencies have urged witnesses and victims to come forward with credible information that could aid the process.
