A broad coalition of student leaders, unions and campus-based organisations across Edo State has endorsed the Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, for the House of Representatives seat for Oredo Federal Constituency, describing him as “a round peg in a round hole” whose experience and temperament align with the demands of legislative service.
Operating under the banner of the Edo Students Alliance for Good Governance (ESAGG), the coalition comprises of representatives from tertiary institutions, student unions, faculty associations and youth advocacy groups within the state.
In a statement issued in Benin City, on Monday, the coalition said the endorsement followed “extensive consultations and a critical appraisal of credible options capable of advancing the interests of Oredo youths and the broader constituency at the National Assembly.”
“After due consideration, we have resolved to unanimously endorse Dr Paddy Iyamu for the Oredo Federal Constituency seat. His record in public service, especially in the education sector, clearly shows capacity, vision and a people-first approach. Without doubt, the cap fits,” the group stated.
The coalition emphasised that Dr Iyamu’s stewardship as Commissioner for Education has repositioned the sector in Edo State, citing improvements in policy coordination, stakeholder engagement and renewed focus on student welfare and institutional development.
“As students, we are direct beneficiaries of many of the reforms and initiatives championed by Dr Iyamu. He has demonstrated uncommon commitment to improving learning conditions, strengthening academic systems and engaging students as critical stakeholders. This is the kind of leadership we want replicated at the federal level,” the statement read.
Among prominent voices backing the endorsement is the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Welfare and Development, Comrade Jimah Mubarak, who described Dr Iyamu as a dependable ally of students and a reformer with a clear grasp of governance.
“Dr Paddy Iyamu has consistently shown that he understands the dynamics of youth development and education. His accessibility, responsiveness and policy-driven leadership make him a strong candidate for the House of Representatives. Oredo stands to gain immensely from his representation,” Mubarak said.
The endorsing coalition also pointed to Dr Iyamu’s antecedents beyond his current office, noting his track record as a technocrat, administrator and bridge-builder who commands respect across different segments of society.
“He is not just a public official; he is a thoughtful leader who listens, consults and delivers. His antecedents reflect integrity, competence and a genuine passion for development. These are the qualities required to effectively represent Oredo Federal Constituency at this critical time,” the coalition added.
Reiterating the urgency of credible representation, the students stressed that the next occupant of the Oredo federal seat must be equipped to articulate the constituency’s needs, influence policy and attract meaningful development.
“Nigeria’s current realities demand lawmakers who are informed, proactive and people-oriented. Dr Iyamu possesses the intellectual depth, legislative potential and grassroots connection to serve Oredo effectively. We urge him to answer this call and offer himself for service,” the statement concluded.
The coalition called on other youth groups, professionals, market associations and community stakeholders within Oredo to rally around the endorsement, expressing confidence that Dr Iyamu’s candidacy would usher in a new era of purposeful and impactful representation.
Observers note that the growing wave of support for Dr Paddy Iyamu, particularly from the student community, could prove decisive in shaping the political landscape ahead of the next general elections.
