The build-up to the APC National Convention gathered fresh momentum in Abuja on Tuesday as the Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, CON, set a high bar for accountability, discipline, and meticulous execution while presiding over the 5th meeting of the Convention Committee on Accommodation and Transportation.
At the Kano State Lodge, where key stakeholders convened, Umahi reminded members that the task before them goes far beyond routine party planning.
Serving as Chairman of the Transportation Committee and Co-Chairman of Accommodation alongside the Governor of Kano State, Umahi emphasized the importance of synergy at the highest level, noting that the credibility of the convention rests heavily on how well logistics are handled.
Opening the session, the Minister acknowledged the groundwork already laid.
“Let me begin by giving my sincere appreciation to all members of this committee. I’m aware that considerable progress has been made since after our previous meetings, and I commend you for the effort invested so far in canvassing our mandate.”
He called for a comprehensive and honest assessment of progress, urging that no detail must be overlooked as the convention draws closer.
“In view of this development and for the benefit of committee members joining us for the first time, it is important that we receive a comprehensive update of activities carried out so far.”
He demanded clarity on hotel arrangements and any emerging challenges, giving a sign that the era of assumptions and vague reporting was over.
As deliberations continued, Umahi cautioned against complacency and stressed that time was no longer on the committee’s side.
“Distinguished members, as the convention draws closer, there is a possibility before us that we should be more critical. We must ensure that all accommodation arrangements are officially coordinated, efficiently executed, and delivered within required timelines.”
He continued: “I want to plead that we don’t shortchange anybody. If we’re sending money for accommodation, we have to contact the Secretariat and see how we can lift up the view of the Governor, former governor, and the deputy governor.”
On transportation, he said:
“This should not be treated as party money. We need to treat these people, whom we want to take care of with dignity, with honesty, and with real goals.”
