ICPC Grants Nasir El-Rufai Temporary Release to Bury Mother

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been granted temporary release from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on compassionate grounds following the death of his mother.

El-Rufai was allowed to return home to enable him participate in the burial rites of his late mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who reportedly died in Cairo, Egypt, after a brief illness.

Sources within the anti-graft agency indicated that the decision to release him was based on humanitarian considerations, giving him the opportunity to mourn with his family and attend funeral arrangements.

The former governor had been in ICPC custody over allegations related to financial misconduct and other charges, with legal proceedings already underway prior to his temporary release.

While the development has been described by some as a compassionate gesture, it has also sparked reactions from observers, particularly regarding the circumstances surrounding his detention and the process that led to his release.

As of the time of filing this report, the ICPC has yet to issue a detailed official statement outlining the conditions attached to his release or when he is expected to return to custody.
