Troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation HADIN KAI, have repelled a Boko Haram attack on a military position in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State, but suffered casualties, including a Commanding Officer and six other personnel.
The attack occurred in the late hours of April 12, 2026, at a location identified as “Charlie 13,” where insurgents attempted to infiltrate the military formation. According to military sources, troops engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, successfully repelling the assault and forcing the insurgents to retreat.
However, the Commanding Officer and six soldiers were later killed after their vehicle reportedly struck an improvised explosive device (IED) while moving within the area following the encounter.
Military authorities described the fallen officer as a courageous leader who advanced toward the frontline to assess the situation and support his troops after the attack.
Despite the losses, troops maintained control of the position, while the attackers were pushed back.
The incident underscores the persistent threat posed by insurgents in Nigeria’s North-East, particularly the continued use of improvised explosive devices even after direct confrontations. Operations under Operation HADIN KAI are ongoing as the military intensifies efforts to stabilise the region.
