The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and transfer of a police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
In a statement issued on April 28, 2026, the Command said the incident occurred on April 26, when operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to intelligence from members of the public. The information indicated that a 28-year-old suspect, identified as Mene Ogidi, had been apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
According to the police, officers were deployed to take the suspect into custody. However, the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm during the operation. The Command stated that the officer acted “in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force,” resulting in the suspect’s death.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident, describing it as an extra-judicial killing. He subsequently ordered the immediate arrest of the officer and his transfer to the State Headquarters in Asaba for disciplinary നടപടions.
Police authorities confirmed that the officer has since been moved to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for “immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution.”
The Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights, stressing its “zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct.”
While extending condolences to the family of the deceased, the Commissioner assured that justice would be served and urged members of the public to remain calm as the process unfolds.
