Bridge Collapse Disrupts Movement on Ilorin–Igbeti Highway in Kwara

Vehicular movement has been brought to a halt following the collapse of a major bridge along the Ilorin–Igbeti highway in Kwara State, leaving commuters stranded and disrupting economic activities in the area.

The affected structure, identified as the Moro Bridge near the Okolowo axis of Ilorin, reportedly gave way in the early hours of Thursday, cutting off a key transport link between Kwara and neighbouring states, including Oyo.

Eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating online show the extent of the damage, with part of the bridge caving in and a truck seen overturned at the scene at the time of the incident.

The collapse has significantly affected traffic flow along the busy route, which serves as a major corridor for commuters, traders, and transport operators. Many road users have been forced to suspend journeys or seek alternative routes, raising concerns over accessibility and delays.

The bridge is considered critical to regional mobility, linking several communities and supporting daily commercial activities across state lines. Its failure is expected to have wider economic implications if urgent intervention is not carried out.

Residents and stakeholders have called on relevant authorities to act swiftly by providing diversion routes and accelerating repair or reconstruction efforts to restore movement and prevent further hardship.

The incident has also renewed concerns about the condition of ageing infrastructure along the corridor, with calls for more proactive maintenance and monitoring to avert similar occurrences in the future.
