Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has sparked fresh controversy after launching a direct criticism of former presidential candidate Peter Obi in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).
In the post, Edochie questioned Obi’s leadership and influence, stating that he does not reflect what he described as the true spirit of the Igbo people. He wrote that Obi “is not a true Igbo man” and lacks the communal value of “onye aghana nwanne ya” a phrase which emphasizes lifting others as one progresses.
The actor further criticized Obi’s record in both business and public service, arguing that there are no widely known individuals who can attribute their success to him. He said, “How can you spend many years in power… yet nobody can say he’s successful today because of you.” He also questioned Obi’s personal impact, adding that he has not uplifted even those within his immediate circle.
Edochie went on to challenge Obi’s capacity to lead Nigeria out of poverty, suggesting that leadership begins with empowering people at a close level. According to him, “If you can’t lift people around you out of poverty, you simply can’t lift Nigeria out of poverty.”
This is not the first time the actor has publicly criticized Obi. In recent weeks, Edochie has made several statements dismissing Obi’s political prospects, including claims that his presidential ambition is not achievable at the moment and that any political alliance involving him would fail.

He has also described Obi’s reported political moves ahead of the 2027 elections as a waste of time, comments that have drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians.
