I’m Not Desperate to Be President – Obi Clarifies Why He Dumped ADC

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has clarified the reasons behind his reported exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing that his decision was not driven by personal disagreements with key political figures within the party.

In a detailed social media statement on Sunday, Obi dismissed claims that he left due to conflicts with party leaders, insisting he continues to hold them in high regard.

“My decision to leave the ADC is not because our highly respected Chairman, Senator David Mark, treated me badly, nor because my leader and elder brother, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, or any other respected leaders did anything personally wrong to me. I will continue to respect them,” he stated.

He further clarified that his concerns were not personal but tied to recurring structural and political challenges within opposition movements, which he said often distract from national development goals.

Obi explained that his experience in political formations has repeatedly shown patterns of internal crisis, distrust, and external interference that make it difficult to maintain focus on service-oriented politics.

However, he was firm in stressing that his departure should not be interpreted as hostility toward individuals he has worked with.

“I have no issues with Senator David Mark, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, or any of the respected leaders I have worked with. My concerns are about the system and how political structures are being operated, not personal relationships,” he implied in his remarks.

Obi added that similar challenges he previously encountered in other political platforms have resurfaced, leading to what he described as distraction from governance-focused engagement.

He maintained that his political philosophy remains anchored on service, humility, and accountability, rather than ambition for office.

“I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President. I am desperate to see a society that can console a mother whose child has been kidnapped or killed… and a Nigeria where people live in dignity,” he said.

Despite stepping away from the party structure, Obi reaffirmed respect for political leaders within the ADC and insisted that his commitment to national development remains unchanged.
