The Police Service Commission has confirmed the dismissal of five police officers over their involvement in the killing of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State.
The officers were linked to the death of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, who was shot on April 26, 2026, in an incident that drew widespread outrage after a video surfaced online.
According to the Nigeria Police Force, the decision followed the conclusion of internal disciplinary proceedings, which found the officers culpable.
An Assistant Superintendent of Police, identified as Nuhu Usman, was among those dismissed.
Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the action takes immediate effect and that the matter has been escalated for prosecution.
“The Force will cooperate fully to ensure the matter is prosecuted to its logical conclusion before a court of competent jurisdiction.”
Police authorities said findings from the investigation showed that the officers’ actions amounted to misconduct, abuse of office, and behaviour that led to the unlawful killing of the victim.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had earlier described the incident as unacceptable.
“This action was criminal, it was unprofessional, and it has no place in the Nigeria Police Force.”
He added that the officers would face criminal charges after their dismissal.
“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to face criminal charges.”
The police said the case file has been forwarded to the appropriate legal authorities for further action.
The killing has continued to generate reactions, with calls for accountability and justice.
