Court Admits Additional Exhibits in Emefiele’s Naira Redesign Trial

Justice Maryanne Anineh of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, has admitted additional documentary exhibits in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, over the alleged unlawful redesign of the naira.

The exhibits were tendered on Monday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission through its counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), during the testimony of the eighth prosecution witness, Jegede Oluwasegun, an official of the National Library.

Among the documents admitted by the court were certified copies of newspaper publications from The Punch, ThisDay, Vanguard, Daily Sun, and The Nation, alongside payment receipts used for the purchase of the newspapers.

According to the prosecution, the documents were presented in compliance with a motion earlier filed by the defence on March 31, 2026, requesting the prosecution to produce press releases and newspaper publications relating to the alleged unlawful naira redesign.

The defence counsel, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), did not object to the admission of the documents, leading the court to accept them as exhibits.

During cross-examination, the witness explained that his responsibilities at the National Library mainly involve attending to information requests from readers and certifying newspaper documents. He clarified that he was neither the author of the publications nor in a position to comment on their contents.

Emefiele is currently facing a four-count charge filed by the EFCC over allegations linked to the printing and redesign of new naira notes while serving as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
